Semen analysis

Collection of Semen (Sperm) Samples for Fertility and Post-Vasectomy Investigations

If you have been referred for semen analysis, please read the following instructions carefully to ensure accurate results and avoid the need for repeat appointments.

Before Your Appointment

  • Arrival: Please arrive on time. If you are delayed, contact the Andrology Department on 023 9228 6799. Late arrivals may result in the need to rebook your appointment.

  • Abstinence: You must abstain from intercourse or masturbation for at least 2 days (48 hours), but no longer than 7 days before your appointment.
Failure to follow this will invalidate the test and require rebooking.

  • Vasectomy Patients Only:

    • Your first post-vasectomy sample should be produced no sooner than 12 weeks after your vasectomy.

    • You must also have had at least 20 ejaculations before providing your first sample.

At the Appointment

  • On arrival, report to Pathology Reception. A member of the Andrology team will meet you, guide you to the private room, and provide final instructions.

  • Hygiene:

    • Wash your hands and penis with water.

    • Rinse thoroughly and dry well before producing your sample.

  • Producing the Sample:

    • Use the private room provided in the Pathology Department.

    • Masturbate directly into the sterile container provided.

    • The entire ejaculate must be collected for accurate analysis.

    • Do not use lubricants or condoms, as they can damage the sample.

  • After providing your sample, wash your hands again.

After Sample Collection

  • Once you have completed the process, please telephone the Andrology team from the private room on 023 9228 6799 or 023 9228 6737.

  • A staff member will:

    • Check your request form and witness your signature.

    • Collect the sample before you leave.

Receiving Results

  • Please do not contact the department for your results.

  • Results will be sent directly to your GP or referring doctor.

Fees & Cancellations

  • Please note that a fee is payable for vasectomy reversal tests.

  • To cancel or reschedule, please call the Andrology Department on 023 9228 6799 as soon as possible.
